If you’ve been sexually active (with or without protection) and you’re experiencing early pregnancy symptoms, you need pregnancy confirmation.  At Birthline, we provide free clinical pregnancy testing to determine if you’re pregnant — and it’s 100% confidential.

WHAT IS A PREGNANCY TEST?

A pregnancy test determines if you’re pregnant by detecting the presence of the hCG hormone, which is associated with pregnancy, in your urine. During your appointment at Birthline, you’ll be asked to provide a urine sample. We’ll administer our free lab-quality pregnancy test to see if hCG can be detected. If the hCG hormone is detected, your test will be positive and you’re most likely pregnant.

AT-HOME PREGNANCY TESTS

Although over-the-counter pregnancy tests are reliable, it’s possible to get a false result. Because women are nervous about the test, they can take them too early or not follow the directions carefully. Your body needs time to build up a sufficient amount of hCG before the pregnancy test can detect it, and different at-home tests are more sensitive than others.

WHEN TO TAKE A PREGNANCY TEST

You’ll get the most accurate results if you take a pregnancy test after your missed period. If your period is regularly every 28-30 days, take the test a day or two after you expected your period to start. If your monthly cycle is normally irregular, wait 5 or 6 days to take the test. If you suspect you might be pregnant, come to Birthline for a lab-quality pregnancy test that is free and confidential.

IF THE TEST COMES BACK POSITIVE

If you receive a positive result on a pregnancy test at Birthline, you’ll want to confirm the details with an ultrasound.  Birthline offers referrals for a free ultrasound to confirm a viable (growing) pregnancy. According to the Mayo Clinic, up to 20% of known pregnancies end in a natural miscarriage. A woman can still get a positive pregnancy test result days or even weeks after a miscarriage. An ultrasound will confirm the status of your pregnancy.
